Histogram

Measured or generated data can be grouped into bins, i.e. discretized by classifying into groups each characterized by a range of values in characteristic variables. The resulting graphical representation, usually limited to one or two variables, is called a (one- or two-dimensional) histogram. This process results in a certain loss of information compared to scatter diagrams, but is frequently necessary for the purpose of showing the statistical properties of data and in applying some calculational methods. On choosing bin sizes for histograms, Binning.
